Neuer's contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of this season, and his future remains uncertain. The 2014 World Cup winner has previously stated that his post-retirement plans are still undecided. After retiring, Neuer may remain at Bayern in a management role, or a return to Schalke 04 is not ruled out. Schalke's supervisory board chairman, Axel Heffer, recently spoke about the possibility of Neuer's return and expressed openness to it.
Heffer stated: "As a club, we can be proud of his career. His departure certainly caused some controversy, but I think everyone makes mistakes, especially when they are young. This matter should be put behind us someday."
Neuer came through Schalke's youth academy and began his professional career there. In 2011, he transferred to Bayern Munich, a decision that sparked discontent among some Schalke fans. However, Neuer subsequently became a club legend at Bayern, winning numerous titles.
Heffer believes that Neuer may enjoy his retirement for a while before deciding on his next step: "Where he wants to work, whether in his hometown or a new one, should be his own decision."
Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has previously stated that the club hopes retired players can continue to participate in management. He cited Franz Beckenbauer, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, and Uli Hoeneß as examples, believing that former players possess rich experience in club and professional football, and therefore can provide assistance to Bayern's management.
Whether Neuer will stay at Bayern Munich or return to Schalke remains to be seen. However, his connection with Schalke may strengthen again after his retirement.
