According to talkSPORT, Tim Vikrie revealed that Esteban may be forced to play as a right wing-back under Xabi Alonso.

Esterwyn played primarily as a right winger in his impressive debut season at Chelsea last year, contributing 8 goals and 4 assists.

However, in Alonso's 3-4-3 system, the right winger position is occupied by Cole Palmer, who is almost certain to start.

Palmer's presence has relegated Esteban to the bench. The Brazilian has been a substitute in Chelsea's three Premier League appearances so far.

His most recent appearance was in Chelsea's 1-2 defeat to Arsenal, where he came on as a substitute for 9 minutes. Late in the game, he had a brilliant shot that nearly silenced the Emirates Stadium, but the ball was tipped over the bar by David Raya.

If wresting his place back from Palmer was already difficult, Chelsea's £117 million signing of Morgan Rodgers this summer has made it even harder for Esterwyn to earn playing time.

With his starting position blocked, Esteban may be forced to play a completely unfamiliar role.

Tim Vickry explains why Esteban might play a new position under Xabi Alonso.

"You'd think about where he fits into Xabi Alonso's tactical approach," Vikrie said on a show.

“Last week, there was a concern from his team that he might have to play as a right wing-back.”

“He doesn’t want to play right wing-back. That’s the exact opposite of what he wants to do.”

Another problem for Esteban is that his preferred position simply doesn't exist in Alonso's system.

The 19-year-old wants to play as a number 10, but Alonso's system uses two central midfielders, leaving them little space to act as pure playmakers.

What made things even more difficult for Esterwyn was that Chelsea had actually been willing to let the young player play freely in his favorite position.

Vickery said: "Don't forget, when he joined Chelsea, his agent said that the reason they chose Chelsea was because Chelsea was more willing to let him play the number 10 position than any other team."

“He wants to play in the middle, he doesn’t necessarily want to always be stuck on the wing.”

"Such a commitment is strange for a club, because the real decision is made by the coach, and we have had several coaches since then."
